“Last Sunday, as I walked around in the bazaar, I realised how much I had missed the chaos, the noise and the air — a strange mix of comforting scents of gulaab, rajnigandha and the smell of kimam. As a child who grew up in a family that celebrated all festivals, I often guessed what it was by looking at the mahaul – oil lamps adorned with jhendu (marigolds), banana leaves complementing the vibrant colours of gulaal and haldi, chandeliers with fresh mogra as if hung from the clouds, and my mother getting ready in front of an ornate dressing table asking me if she had placed the bindi correctly on her forehead.”
